Maastricht University’s Mariëlle Wijermars presented at the NL IGF Event 2025, held in The Hague in preparation for the United Nations Internet Governance Forum 2025.
Her keynote drew attention to the threat authoritarian states pose to the future of the global open internet, with a particular focus on Russia. She presented the strategies Russia uses to control the internet and suppress online information domestically, as well as across borders. She warned of the ongoing undermining of human rights standards and the danger of the erosion of the multi-stakeholder model in Internet governance.
